W.M. Chithrananda
W.M. Chithrananda began his boxing journey in 1975, representing St. Matthew’s College under the guidance of his coach, National Boxer Mr. T.G. Somapala. His talent and determination quickly made him stand out in the school boxing arena.
In 1977, he was crowned Best Boxer at the T.B. Jayah Boxing Meet, a title that reflected his skill and discipline. From 1976 to 1979, he dominated his weight category, winning consistently throughout those years. His exceptional performance in 1979 earned him the title of Senior Best Boxer at the prestigious Stubbs Shield Championship.
Later that same year, Chithrananda entered the club boxing scene, where he was named Best Loser at the 1979 National Championship – a testament to his fighting spirit and resilience. Despite still being a schoolboy, he was selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Sri Lanka-India Invitational Boxing Meet, where he emerged victorious in his bouts. From there, he continued to compete in major club tournaments such as the Clifford Cup, Layton Cup, and the National Championships. At the 1982 Clifford Cup, he was honored with the Most Scientific Boxer award for his refined technique and tactical brilliance.
On the international stage, W.M. Chithrananda proudly represented Sri Lanka in several key events:

- 1980 International Youth Camp held alongside the Moscow Olympic Games
- 1982 Asian Games, New Delhi
- 1984-Invitational Boxing Meet in India (which he won)
- 1984-SAARC Games, Kathmandu, Nepal (Bronze Medalist)
- 1985-Asian Championship, Bangkok
After a decade of competitive boxing filled with triumphs, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, W.M. Chithrananda bid farewell to the sport he loved in 1985-leaving behind a legacy of dedication, discipline, and pride for Sri Lankan boxing.
