H. K. Karunaratne
Sri Lanka has produced many fine pugilists, but few names shine as brightly in the annals of the sport as Herath Kapuralalage Karunaratne, better known to boxing fans as "Boxing Karu." Born on 21st October 1941 in Karawanella, Karunaratne rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most decorated and admired boxers in the nation's history.
Karunaratne's journey into the ring began after he joined the Sri Lanka Army in the early 1960s. Though a newcomer to the sport, his natural talent, discipline, and determination allowed him to learn quickly and dominate the local circuit. Within a few years, he established himself as a household name in the national boxing scene.
Representing the Army, Karunaratne swept aside opponents in Inter-Unit, Defence Services, and Clifford Cup tournaments, often walking away with the Best Boxer titles. His success extended to the Layton Cup Championships and multiple National Championships, where he cemented his reputation as a fighter of exceptional skill and courage.
Karunaratne's crowning achievement came at the 1967 Asian Boxing Championships, where he won Sri Lanka's first-ever gold medal in the Light Flyweight division (48 kg). This landmark victory was not only a personal triumph but also a moment of national pride, showcasing Sri Lanka's potential in the international boxing arena. The following year, he carried the nation's hopes to the global stage, competing in the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games. Though he did not medal, his performances earned Sri Lanka respect in international boxing circles and inspired a new generation of athletes.
