SFHJ Gunasekara

Born on 31st May 1950 in Katunayake, SFHJ Gunasekara is a name etched in the history of Sri Lankan boxing for his remarkable achievements and long-standing dominance in the ring. He joined the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in 1971, serving under the prestigious Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) regiment. It was within the Army ranks that his boxing career began to flourish under the guidance of H.K. Karunaratne, the distinguished gold medalist of the 1967 Asian Championships. Gunasekara's unmatched skill, discipline, and fighting spirit made him an unbeaten National Champion in the Welterweight division from 1973 to 1986, an extraordinary record that reflects his consistency and dedication to the sport.

Representing Sri Lanka on numerous international stages, he brought immense honor to the country. His notable appearances. include:

  • 1975-1st King’s Cup, Bangkok – Bronze Medalist
  • 1980-9th Asian Championships, Bombay
  • 1982-Asian Games, New Delhi

He also shone in inter-military contests, securing victory in the 1978 SLA vs. Indian Army Duel Boxing Contest, further proving his class and resilience. Beyond the boxing ring, Gunasekara was a versatile athlete. He dominated in athletics as well, emerging as the Sri Lanka 20km Race Walking Champion for three consecutive years 1976, 1977, and 1978, in events organized by BATA and the Ministry of Sports. A true all-round sportsman and national asset, SFHJ Gunasekara exemplified the highest standards of discipline, endurance, and patriotism through his career both as a soldier and a boxer.
