R. L.Wijesooriya
Chief Inspector Rasika Lasantha Wijesooriya is a shining example of how dedication to sport can shape one's entire life. From his humble beginnings at St. Sylvester's College, Kandy, to his distinguished service in the Sri Lanka Police, his journey reflects discipline, courage, and leadership - both in and out of the ring.
R. L Wijesooriya entered the boxing arena in 1981, beginning a sporting journey marked by determination and skill. The following year, he represented St. Sylvester's at the T. B. Jayah Boxing Meet and the Stubbs Shield Boxing Championships (1982), competing in the Pin Weight Class (75 Ibs). His early performances displayed remarkable promise, paving the way for a series of victories in the years that followed. He went on to win the Francis Jayawardena Memorial Boxing Meet (1985) and excelled in the Junior Championships of 1983, 1984, and 1985, earning a reputation as one of the most talented young boxers of his era.
Wijesooriya's consistent success earned him wide recognition:

- Crown Colours from St. Sylvester’s College (1985)
- Sri Lanka Schools Boxing Colours (1985)
In 1985, he captained the St. Sylvester’s Boxing Team, demonstrating both skill and leadership. That same year, he proudly represented Sri Lanka at the 5th Asian Junior Boxing Championships held in Kathmandu, Nepal, winning a Bronze Medal a milestone achievement for a schoolboy boxer from Kandy.
His dedication extended beyond the ring, serving as a College Prefect (1986/87)-reflecting the balance of athletic excellence and academic discipline that defined his school life.
In 1989, Wijesooriya joined the Sri Lanka Police as a Sub Inspector, continuing his boxing career at the national level. His debut year was extraordinary winning the Novices, Intermediate, Clifford Cup, and Layton Cup championships in the Flyweight Division (51 kg) before going on to claim the National Championship title.His achievements were recognized with the prestigious Sri Lanka Police Colours (1990), and in 1992, he was appointed Captain of the Police Boxing Team, continuing his tradition of leadership and excellence.
Beyond his active years in competition, Chief Inspector Wijesooriya became a vital contributor to boxing administration and officiating. His qualifications highlight his dedication to developing the sport at every level:
