Luxman Mapatuna
Luxman Mapatuna's boxing journey is a story of perseverance, passion, and lifelong commitment to the sport he loves. His introduction to boxing began at his alma mater, Carey College, where his early talent quickly shone through. He later joined the Central YMCA Boxing Club, a respected institution that helped shape many national champions, before enlisting with the Sri Lanka Air Force, where he continued to refine his skills. Representing the Air Force, Luxman achieved remarkable success, becoming the Defence Services Flyweight Champion in 1988 and the Sri Lanka Air Force Inter-Command Champion from 1986 to 1989 and again in 1991. His consistent performances made him a force in the national boxing circuit.
He was crowned Most Outstanding Boxer in 1991, having earlier won the ABA Novices Meet (Light Flyweight) in 1984 for YMCA. His national-level accolades include being Runner-up and Best Loser at the 1991 ABA National Championships, Layton Cup Runner-up multiple times (1985, 1986, 1987, 1991, and 1995), and Layton Cup Winner in 1988 Luxman was also a Clifford Cup Runner-up in 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1991, and the ABA Intermediate Champion in 1985. His international exposure included representing Sri Lanka at the 1991 SAF Games, reflecting his dedication to national glory. Transitioning from a boxer to a mentor, Luxman served as Head Coach of the Sri Lanka Air Force Boxing Team in 1996 and 1997, later returning to Carey College in 2025 as Head Coach, nurturing the next generation of boxers. Luxman also played a major administrative role in Sri Lankan boxing, serving as Secretary of the Sri Lanka Boxing Coaches Association in 2004 and later as Vice President in 2025. His professional development includes completing Olympic Solidarity Coaching Courses (AIBA) in 1991, 1997, and 2007, and the IOC Sports Administration Course in 2005.
A respected Referee and Judge since 2000, Luxman Mapatuna continues to contribute to the sport at multiple levels as a boxer, coach, administrator, and official. His journey reflects the true spirit of Sri Lankan boxing a legacy of discipline, honor, and continuous service to the sport.
