His journey from representing the Sri Lanka Air Force to serving in the Sri Lanka Police is marked by remarkable achievements and an unwavering passion for the sport. Dodangoda first rose to prominence as the Middleweight Champion at the Sri Lanka Air Force Inter-Unit Championships from 1986 to 1989, showcasing exceptional skill and consistency. In 1987, he captured both the ABA Novices and Layton Cup titles, marking his emergence as one of the country's most promising boxers. The following year, 1988, was a golden one winning the Layton Cup, Defence Services Championship, and the National Championship in the middleweight category. In 1989, he again claimed the Layton Cup and finished Runner-Up at the Clifford Cup. reinforcing his dominance in the ring. Stepping up to the light heavyweight division in 1991, Dodangoda won the Layton Cup, became Runner-Up at the National Championship, and secured the Government Services Light Heavyweight title. His success continued in 1992 and 1993, winning consecutive Layton Cups and placing Runner-Up at the Clifford Cup both years. After retiring from competition, Dodangoda continued serving the sport as a Referee and Judge with the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (ABASL). His expertise earned him One-Star Referee status, and in 2004, he proudly represented Sri Lanka as a Referee and Judge at the 3rd Asian Indoor Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.
