His rise began with a remarkable victory at the National Boxing Championships in 1979. where his unique left-handed stance and tactical precision earned him national recognition. He continued his winning streak by capturing the ABA Intermediate Boxing Meet title in 1980, proving his dominance in the amateur boxing arena.
That same year, G. W. Perera went on to claim multiple major titles the Clifford Cup Boxing Championship in the Bantamweight category, and the prestigious Albert Perera Memorial Cup. His performance in the Army Inter-Regiment Boxing Championship earned him the Best Boxer Award, confirming his status as one of the most formidable boxers of the era. In 1981, Perera's reign continued as he won the Clifford Cup Boxing Championship, the National Boxing Championship, and the Defence Services Championship, completing a historic triple triumph. His success earned him a place on the Sri Lanka National Team, representing the nation at the Asian Boxing Championship in South Korea, where he showcased his talent on the international stage. Even in the mid-1980s, Perera's dominance never waned.
