Basil Henricus

A Boxer and Athlete Par Excellence

Basil Henricus, born on October 3, 1922, was a distinguished boxer and athlete who represented Sri Lanka on the international stage. He competed in boxing at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, showcasing his exceptional talent and dedication. Educated at Royal College, Colombo, Henricus displayed remarkable skill from a young age. At just 13, he participated in the Stubbs Shield Boxing Meet, winning his weight category, earning the title of Best Boxer, and receiving the prestigious Jayewardene Cup. In 1940, as a student, he competed in the Amateur Boxing Championships, defeating K. Μ. Fernando of the Ports Engineering Department and Ratnayake of the Royal Armoury, and was awarded the Walmsley Trophy as the Best Boxer. By 1941, Henricus captained the Royal College Boxing Team, leading them to victory in the Stubbs Shield. The following year, heentered the National Boxing Championships for the first time and secured the featherweight title, establishing himself as one of the country's finest boxers. Beyond the ring, Basil served as a Sports Instructor in the Essential Services Corps of the Royal Ceylon Navy from 1941 to 1942 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1943, reflecting his leadership both in sports and service.
