Ajith Alhakoon

A Proud Thurstanite in the Boxing Ring

Ajith Alhakoon, a distinguished boxer from Thurstan College, Colombo, began his boxing journey in 1978 under the expert guidance of Coach Donald Munasinghe. From his very first steps into the ring, Alhakoon displayed exceptional skill and determination, earning victory in his weight category at the Thurstan College Inter-House Boxing Meet a performance that marked the beginning of a promising career. In 1979, representing Thurstan College, he went on to secure impressive victories at two prestigious school-level tournaments the L.V. Jayaweera Memorial Cup Boxing Meet and the T.B. Jayah Memorial Cup Boxing Meet, both organized by the Schools Boxing Association of Sri Lanka. These achievements highlighted his growing dominance among schoolboy boxers of his era.

The following year, in 1980, Alhakoon made a memorable appearance at the Stubbs Shield Boxing Championship, one of the most esteemed events in Sri Lankan school boxing, Competing in his maiden major schools' championship, he emerged as the Runner-up, a remarkable feat that underscored his technical skill and fighting spirit. For his outstanding performances in 1979 and 1980, Ajith Alhakoon was proudly awarded College Colours, recognizing his contribution to Thurstan's rich sporting legacy. Beyond the boxing ring, Alhakoon also represented Thurstan College 1st XV Rugby Team and was an active member of the Senior Cadet Platoon, reflecting his all-round excellence, discipline, and leadership qualities.
