Indradasa Jayasinghe
Born in 1938 and educated at Mahabodhi Vidyalaya, Colombo, Mr. Indradasa Jayasinghe stands as one of the most dedicated and influential figures in Sri Lankan boxing. His lifelong commitment to the sport-as a boxer, coach, referee, and administrator-has left an enduring mark on the national boxing arena.
boxing began at the Pee Vee Boxing Club, where he trained alongside notable contemporaries such as Anton John, Somapala Perera, and K.V. Dharmadasa. His natural talent and determination quickly propelled him through the ranks of junior and senior-level boxing. Upon joining the Sri Lanka Police, he continued his passion for the sport by representing the Police in inter-division boxing tournaments. During this golden era, Police boxing was at its peak, producing champions such as late DIG Dharmasiri Weerakon, DIG Sumith Liyanage, DIG Percy Wijesooriya, H.P. and C.P. Jayasooriya, and Rahul Silva. Among these distinguished athletes, Indradasa Jayasinghe established himself as a formidable competitor, emerging as a champion in his weight category.
Transitioning from athlete to mentor, Indradasa Jayasinghe became a boxing coach in 1980 and went on to establish the Wennappuwa Boxing Club, nurturing many talented young boxers. Under his guidance, the Jayasinghe brothers and several other promising athletes from Wennappuwa rose to prominence in national competitions. His passion for developing the sport extended to schools such as Joseph Vaz College, Katukenda Central College, and Wekada Central College, all of which began competing actively in the School Boxing Association Championships and later in Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (ABASL) open tournaments Notably, former Sri Lanka National Boxing Coach Wasantha Vithanage began his boxing journey under the mentorship of Mr. Jayasinghe-a testament to his profound influence as a trainer and leader.
In 1992, Mr. Jayasinghe qualified as a Boxing Referee and Judge, where his fair judgment and deep understanding of the sport earned him widespread respect. His contribution extended beyond the ring, as he played a vital role in administration and governance within the boxing community. As a respected leader, he was elected President of the Sri Lanka Boxing Coaches Association, where he tirelessly worked to uplift the standards of coaching and provide opportunities for aspiring trainers across the country.
Indrafasa Jayasinghe's service and leadership transcended national boundaries. In 2006, he served as the Manager of the Sri Lanka Boxing Team at the Adajaniya Cup Boxing Tournament in Pakistan, representing the nation with great pride and professionalism. Parallel to his sporting journey, he rose through the ranks of the Sri Lanka Police, achieving the prestigious rank of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)-а reflection of his discipline, leadership, and integrity both in and out of the ring.
