R. Marikkar is celebrated as one of Sri. Lanka's most accomplished boxers, with a career spanning over two decades, marked by consistent excellence at national and international competitions. Known for his skill, resilience, and dedication, Marikkar represented schools, defense services, and the Sri Lanka Air Force with pride
Marikkar made his mark early, competing in the T.B. Jayah Memorial Boxing Meets, where he was runner-up in the 105 lbs category in 1980 and 125 lbs in 1981, before clinching the 125 lbs title in 1982. He won the Stubbs' Shield twice (120 lbs in 1982 and 135 lbs in 1984) and emerged victorious in the Colombo Schools vs Outstation Schools 130 lbs match in 1982. He went on to dominate national tournaments, winning the Albert Perera Memorial Boxing Meet (60 kg) in 1987 and securing multiple medals at the National Sports Festival across various weight categories from 1995 to 2002. Other notable achievements include runner-up finishes at the Layton Cup, Clifford Cup, National Championships, and Defence Services Boxing Championship.
Marikkar proudly represented Sri Lanka at the 5th Asian Junior Championship (60 kg) in 1983, where he claimed the gold medal, highlighting his international caliber.
Beyond the ring, Marikkar served the Sri Lanka Air Force, earning colors in 1997 and 1998, and later contributed as a coach from 2006 to 2011. He participated in numerous coaching and technical courses, including seminars conducted by the Sri Lanka Amateur Boxing Coaches Association, Olympic Solidarity (AIBA/USA Boxing), and the International Olympic Committee, demonstrating his commitment to nurturing the next generation of boxers.
