B. L. Cooray is one of the outstanding boxers produced by St. Matthew's College, Dematagoda, known for his determination, discipline, and passion for the sport. He rose to prominence after winning the Francis Jayawardene Memorial Cup Boxing Meet in 1980, showcasing his skill and fighting spirit. At the ABA Novices Boxing Meet, Cooray finished as Runner-Up and was also recognized as the Best Loser of the Meet, proving his resilience and heart as a true sportsman.

Continuing his fine form, he once again won the Francis Jayawardene Memorial Cup and became Runner-Up at the T. B. Jayah Memorial Cup Boxing Meet. He also triumphed at the Kandy Invitation Boxing Meet and proudly represented the Schools Team in the Royal College vs. Schools Boxing Meet (1980), where his team secured victory. B. L.
