Mohamed Wazir Sourjah
Mohamed Wazir Sourjah's remarkable journey in boxing spans from athlete to respected administrator, showcasing unwavering commitment and excellence in every role he undertook
Wazir began boxing at St. Michael's College, Colpetty in 1969, earning the Best Loser award in the Colombo vs Outstation Dual Meet (under 65 lbs). In 1970, he became Runner-up at the ABA Junior Championships under 65 lbs, signaling his rising talent.
blossomed into one of the school's finest boxers:
- 1971-Won Stubbs Shield Junior Best Boxer (under 85 lbs)
- 1972-Captured ABA Junior Championship (under 75 lbs)
- 1973-A stellar year: won Stubbs Shield (under 110 lbs), represented Sri Lanka Schools Boxing Association vs Bombay Schools, and was adjudged Best Boxer at the Royal Inter-House Meet. Served as Royal College Boxing Captain, earning College and Schools Colours.
- 1975-Won Stubbs Shield (under 120 lbs).
Represented YMCA Colombo, winning ABA Novices and Intermediate Meets (under 100 lbs). From 1977-82, he competed for the Sri Lanka Police Sports Club, captaining the team in 1981/82 and receiving Police Colours. He was also named Best Boxer (Flyweight) at the Dowbiggin Cup in 1979.
Wazir served as Honorary Secretary of the ABA Sri Lanka (2006-2008) and as a National Referee and Judge (1990-2017). He managed national boxing teams at major international events including:
- Commonwealth Games – Melbourne (2006)
- Commonwealth Championships Glasgow
- World Championships Guangzhou, China
- Asian Games – Doha, Qatar
He also completed the IOC/NOC Sports Administration Course (2007).
A distinguished Superintendent of Police, Wazir holds F.ISF (Sri Lanka) and M.ISMI-CSMP (UK) qualifications, with advanced training in Law Enforcement and National Security in Malaysia, Singapore, the UK, and the USA. From the boxing ring to national service, Mohamed Wazir Sourjah stands as a symbol of integrity, leadership, and lifelong dedication to Sri Lankan boxing.
