Nalin Priyanka Jayasinghe
Nalin Priyanka Jayasinghe embarked on his boxing journey in 1980 at the Wennappuwa Boxing Club, which was founded by the late SP Indradasa Jayasinghe. He received his early education at Nalanda College, Colombo,
and later at Joseph Vaz College, where his passion for boxing continued to flourish. Representing Wennappuwa Boxing Club from 1980 to 1985, Nalin quickly established himself as a talented and disciplined boxer, earning recognition for his skill, determination, and sportsmanship. His impressive achievements during this period include:
- Winner – ABA Novices and Intermediate Boxing Championships (1983)
- Winner – Layton Cup Boxing Tournament (1984 & 1985)
- Winner – Clifford Cup Boxing Tournament (1985 &1986)
- Most Scientific Boxer Clifford Cup (1985 & 1986)
In 1986, Nalin joined the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet, where he continued to excel both as a soldier and a sportsman. That same year, he represented the Army at the Clifford Cup Championship and earned a place in the Sri Lanka National Boxing Team, marking the beginning of an illustrious national career.
He proudly represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Boxing Championships held in Bangkok, Thailand (1985) and later captained the national team at the 2nd International Boxing Tournament in Kathmandu, Nepal in 1985, where he won a bronze medal for the country. Making history as the first commissioned officer to represent the Sri Lanka Army in boxing, Nalin Priyanka Jayasinghe holds a distinguished place in the nation’s boxing legacy. His commitment, leadership, and sportsmanship continue to inspire the next generation of Sri Lankan boxers.
