The name Dharmasiri Weerakon is remembered with deep respect and admiration both in the boxing ring and in the field of law enforcement. He stood as a proud representative of Sri Lanka during boxing's golden era, later becoming a respected boxing administrator, and at the same time rising to the prestigious rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).

Boxing Career - Local & International

Dharmasiri Weerakon's entry into boxing was marked by skill, courage, and discipline. Educated at Christian College, Kotte, he took to boxing at a young age and trained under renowned coaches such as Mervyn Peiris, Albert Perera, and Alex Obeyesekere. National Dominance (1950s-1960s): Won the National Boxing Championships consistently between 1958-1961 in lightweight and light welterweight divisions. Awarded the William Manning Challenge Cup (1958) as Best Boxer, Received the Caltex Trophy (1959) as "Boxing Star of the Year." International Exposure Represented Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games, competing in the men's welterweight category. Represented the YMCA team in India (1958), recording victories in Calcutta, Banapur, and Bombay. Dharmasiri Weerakon was admired for his technical skill, discipline, and sportsmanship, qualities that made him one of the standout figures of Sri Lanka's amateur boxing scene.

Contribution as a Boxing Official & Administrator

After retiring from competitive boxing in the early 1960s, Weerakon remained devoted to the sport. Served as Secretary of the National Boxing Federation of Sri Lanka (1985-1989). Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka. Officiated as a referee and judge, including at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Widely respected as a mentor and guide to younger boxers and referees. His commitment ensured that the high standards of boxing were upheld, strengthening the foundation of the sport in Sri Lanka.

Distinguished Police Service

Parallel to his boxing career, Dharmasiri Weerakon joined the Sri Lanka Police, where he served with honor and integrity. Rose through the ranks to the prestigious position of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG). Recognized for his discipline, fairness, and leadership, which earned him respect among colleagues and the public. His career mirrored the values of boxing courage, commitment, and justice.
